🌿 Steady Mind in Brahman: Gita Chapter 5 Shloka 20 Explained

Sanskrit Shloka (श्लोक)

IAST Transliteration

na prahṛṣyet priyaṃ prāpya noḍvijet prāpya cāpriyam ।
sthira-buddhir asa-mūḍho brahma-vid brahmaṇi sthitaḥ ॥ 5.20 ॥

English Translation

A knower of Brahman, firmly established in Brahman, does not rejoice in obtaining what is pleasant, nor is he disturbed when confronted with what is unpleasant. His intellect is steady and undeluded.

English Explanation

Krishna describes the temperament of a Brahma-knower:

  • Not rejoicing at pleasure: Maintains equanimity and inner contentment.

  • Not disturbed by displeasure: Free from anger, fear, or attachment.

  • Steady intellect: Remains calm amidst life’s ups and downs.

  • Undeluded: Not influenced by illusion or ignorance.

The enlightened soul knows that pleasure and pain are transient phenomena of the body and mind. By remaining steady and balanced, the yogi attains mastery over the senses and experiences lasting peace.
