(Devanagari)

🔤 IAST Transliteration

rajas-tamaś ca abhibhūya sattvaṁ bhavati bhārata |
rajaḥ sattvaṁ tamaś caiva tamaḥ sattvaṁ rajastathā ||10||

📘 English Translation

O Bharata (Arjuna),
sometimes goodness (sattva) arises under the influence of passion (rajas) and ignorance (tamas).
Sometimes passion (rajas) arises under the influence of goodness (sattva) and ignorance (tamas),
and sometimes ignorance (tamas) arises under the influence of goodness (sattva) and passion (rajas).

🌍 Detailed English Explanation

In this verse, Krishna explains the interplay of the three modes of material nature. The three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—do not act in isolation. They influence each other and produce different outcomes:

  • Rajas and Tamas can give rise to Sattva – passion and ignorance can lead to the development of knowledge and purity.

  • Sattva and Tamas can give rise to Rajas – purity and ignorance can motivate desire and action.

  • Sattva and Rajas can give rise to Tamas – knowledge and desire can create delusion or lethargy if mixed with imbalance.

Understanding this dynamic helps the practitioner recognize the transient and interdependent nature of material qualities, and guides one to rise above them.

Life Lessons

📌 In English

  • Gunas are not permanent; they influence each other

  • Awareness is necessary to manage the changing modes

  • Balance enhances sattva for spiritual progress

  • Ego and dissatisfaction can disturb this balance

Conclusion
