Seated on that seat, the yogi should focus the mind in concentration, control the functions of mind and senses, and practice yoga for the purification of the self.
(Detailed Hindi Explanation)
Detailed English Explanation
In this verse, Lord Krishna continues guiding the yogi on the actual practice of meditation after preparation of seat and environment.
-
Concentrating the mind (ekāgram manaḥ): The yogi must withdraw the mind from distractions and direct it toward a single focus. Concentration is the doorway to meditation.
-
Disciplining mind and senses (yata-cittendriya-kriyaḥ): Mastery over one’s thoughts and sensory impulses is vital. Without restraint, the mind wanders and yoga cannot succeed.
-
Seated firmly (upaviśya āsane): Physical stillness supports mental stillness. The posture must be steady and comfortable to allow inner focus.
-
For self-purification (ātma-viśuddhaye): The ultimate aim is not power or pleasure but purification of the inner self. Yoga cleanses the consciousness of ignorance, attachment, and desires, aligning it with higher truth.
Thus, this verse teaches us that true yoga is the art of inner discipline, combining concentration, restraint, and purpose.

(Conclusion)
