🕊️ Friend or Foe Within | Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6, Verse 24 Explained

📖 Sanskrit Shloka

🔤 IAST Transliteration

śrī-bhagavān uvāca –
bandhur ātmātmanas tasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ
anātmanastu śatrutve varteta ātmāiva śatruvat ॥ 6.24 ॥

🌐 Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)

🌐 English Translation

The Supreme Lord said – One who conquers the self by the self is his own friend; but one who fails to do so treats himself as his own enemy.

🪷 Detailed English Explanation

Krishna explains the importance of self-mastery and inner control:

  • Friend of the self: One who conquers mind, desires, and senses through self-discipline is his own best friend.

  • Conquered by the self: Victory over one’s own mind through inner effort.

  • Enemy within: One who fails to control himself behaves as his own enemy.

  • Self-destruction: Lack of self-control leads to inner conflict, suffering, and eventual self-damage.

This verse teaches that true friendship and support begin with conquering one’s own mind and desires, and failing to do so leads to inner enmity.

🌱 Life Lessons / Moral Teachings

✨ In English:

  1. Victory over one’s mind and desires makes a person his own true friend.

  2. Lack of self-control creates inner conflict and enmity.

  3. Meditation and yoga strengthen the resolve of the soul.

  4. Controlling oneself is the path to peace, happiness, and success.

🏁 Conclusion

Bhagavad Gita 6.24 emphasizes that self-mastery is the highest form of friendship. A disciplined yogi, who conquers his desires and mind, becomes his own ally, while lack of self-control turns one into one’s own adversary. This verse inspires us to look inward for guidance, strength, and harmony.
