🌊 Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 70 – The Ocean-Like Mind: Why Desire Cannot Shake the Wise

📜 IAST Transliteration:

āpūryamāṇam acala-pratiṣṭhaṁ
samudram āpaḥ praviśanti yadvat |
tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśanti sarve
sa śāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī ||

🌐 English Translation:

Just as the ocean remains full and steady even as waters flow into it from all sides, so too does the person remain unmoved as all desires enter him. That person attains peace—not the one who longs for desires.

📖 Explanation in English:

Lord Krishna uses the majestic metaphor of the ocean to describe the mind of the spiritually wise:

  • The ocean constantly receives water from rivers but remains still and vast.

  • Similarly, the self-realized person allows desires to arise and pass, but remains unmoved and centered.

  • He does not act out of craving or chase gratification.

  • Only such a person attains peace.

  • One who is desire-driven (kāma-kāmī) keeps chasing fulfillment and hence, remains in restlessness and dissatisfaction.

This shloka beautifully emphasizes the difference between allowing and attaching — true peace comes not from suppressing desires, but from not being controlled by them.

💡 Life Lessons / Takeaways:

  1. Be like the ocean – Vast, deep, and unshaken by incoming waves of desire.

  2. Desires are natural, attachment is optional – Watch them arise, but don’t let them rule.

  3. Peace comes from inner fullness – Not from fulfilling every want.

  4. Craving leads to chaos – Contentment leads to calm.

  5. You don’t have to fight desires — just don’t follow them blindly.
