The Discipline of Solitude – Bhagavad Gita 6.10 Explanation

IAST Transliteration

yogī yuñjīta satatam ātmānaṁ rahasi sthitaḥ ।
ekākī yata-cittātmā nirāśīr aparigrahaḥ ॥ 6.10 ॥

English Translation

A yogi should constantly practice self-discipline in seclusion, remaining alone, with a controlled mind and body, free from desires and possessions.

English Explanation

In this verse, Lord Krishna defines the lifestyle of a yogi.

  • The yogi must reside in solitude, away from distractions, to focus fully on spiritual practice.

  • He should be alone, not dependent on the company of others for inner peace.

  • With a controlled mind and senses, he avoids the fluctuations of desire and impulse.

  • Being desireless (nirāśīḥ) means not expecting rewards, recognition, or comforts.

  • Practicing non-possession (aparigraha) ensures freedom from material burdens that tie the soul to worldly attachments.

This verse highlights the discipline, detachment, and simplicity required on the path of yoga. It is not about running away from the world, but about cultivating a focused, desire-free state of mind that leads to liberation.

Equal Vision Beyond Friends and Foes – Bhagavad Gita 6.9 Explanation

IAST Transliteration

suhṛn-mitrāry-udāsīna-madhyastha-dveṣya-bandhuṣu ।
sādhuṣv api ca pāpeṣu sama-buddhir viśiṣyate ॥ 6.9 ॥

English Translation

A yogi is considered supreme who regards equally a well-wisher, a friend, an enemy, the indifferent, the neutral, the hateful, a relative, the pious, and even the sinful.

English Explanation

In this verse, Lord Krishna emphasizes the quality of equanimity that defines a true yogi.

  • Whether dealing with a well-wisher, friend, or enemy, the yogi does not let emotions of attachment or hatred dominate.

  • With the indifferent, neutral, or hostile, he remains balanced, not taking sides out of bias.

  • Even towards relatives, his treatment is free from over-attachment.

  • The yogi sees saints and sinners alike through the lens of the soul, not the fluctuating behaviors of the body or mind.

This verse teaches us that true spirituality lies in seeing the divine essence equally present in everyone. Such impartiality is not weakness—it is the highest strength of a yogi, who remains calm in every situation.

Lord Krishna makes it clear that true yoga is living with equality of vision. When we rise above dualities of like and dislike, friend and foe, saint and sinner, we enter into the realm of spiritual maturity. This is the path to real peace and liberation.
