Bhagavad Gita Chapter 13 Shloka 9 – Understanding the Self in All Beings and the Question of Liberation

Sanskrit Shloka (Devanagari Script):

IAST Transliteration:
Yasmin sarvāṇi bhūtāni ātmāivābhūd vijānataḥ |
Tatra ko mokṣaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ kṣatriyādayaḥ tathā ||9||

Hindi Translation:

English Translation:
When a wise person realizes that all beings are essentially the self, then what is liberation (moksha)? How should it be understood by those, including warriors (Kshatriyas), who attain this knowledge?

Detailed English Explanation (400+ words):

In this shloka, Krishna explains the deep principle of the self and liberation (moksha).

Perceiving the Self in All Beings:

  • A wise person perceives the same self in all living beings.

  • They understand that the true nature of life transcends body, caste, or external roles.

The Question of Liberation (Moksha):

  • If the self is realized in all beings, what does liberation mean?

  • Liberation is not achieved through mere external actions or social status, but through knowledge and realization of the self.

Meaning for Kshatriyas and Others:

  • Those engaged in duties like warfare or governance (Kshatriyas) can also attain spiritual understanding of moksha if they perceive the self in all beings.

  • Moksha means performing duties with knowledge, wisdom, and experiencing the soul in all.

Modern Life Relevance:

  • Many today associate moksha with rituals or material rewards of action.

  • This shloka teaches that true liberation is found in understanding and experiencing the self within all beings.

Practical Application:

  • Practice meditation and self-reflection to experience the self in all beings.

  • Perform your duties with knowledge and detachment from outcomes.

Example:

  • A doctor or teacher who works for service and knowledge, recognizing the same soul in all beings, walks the path of true liberation (moksha).

Life Lessons / Moral Teachings:

English:

  1. Experiencing the self in all beings is the mark of a true wise person.

  2. Liberation (moksha) is achieved through realization of the self, not external actions or social status.

  3. Perform duties with knowledge and wisdom, without attachment to results.

Conclusion:

This shloka teaches that true liberation (moksha) comes from realizing the self in all beings through knowledge and experience. Through meditation and introspection, we can attain balance, peace, and spiritual growth in life.

Bhagavad Gita 7.18 Explained in Hindi & English”

🔤 IAST Transliteration:

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tv ātmaiva me matam,
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṁ gatim.

🇬🇧 English Translation:

All these devotees are indeed noble, but the wise one (jñānī) is verily My own Self. For, with his mind steadfast, he is established in Me alone as the supreme goal.

🌸 Detailed English Explanation:

Lord Krishna here uplifts all devotees but glorifies the wise one (jñānī) as being closest to the Divine essence itself.

He says:

“All these are noble, but the wise one is My very Self.”

This profound declaration reveals the unity between God and the realized soul. The jñānī has transcended ego and illusion; he no longer sees God as someone separate. His awareness is firmly established in the truth — “I am one with the Supreme.”

  • All devotees are noble (udārāḥ sarva evaite): Krishna honors every path of devotion, no matter the motive.

  • The wise is My very Self (jñānī tv ātmaiva me matam): The jñānī does not worship externally; he worships from the heart, knowing that the Lord resides within.

  • Firmly established in Me (yuktātmā): His mind, heart, and soul are united with the Divine.

  • Seeks Me as the highest goal (mām evānuttamāṁ gatim): He desires nothing else, not even heaven or liberation — for union with God itself is his liberation.

In essence, this verse expresses the ultimate teaching of Advaita (non-duality): that the realized devotee and God are not two, but one in spirit.

(Life Lessons):

🌸 In English:

  1. All forms of devotion are noble, but wisdom-filled devotion is supreme.

  2. True realization is recognizing God within oneself.

  3. Liberation comes when the mind rests unwaveringly in the Divine.

  4. The purpose of devotion is not to receive from God, but to merge into Him.

🕊️ Conclusion:

This verse is the pinnacle of spiritual wisdom in Jnana-Vijnana Yoga.
Lord Krishna reminds us that while every devotee is dear to Him, the wise one transcends duality and becomes one with the Lord. Such a soul does not pray for favors — he lives in God-consciousness.

When devotion becomes pure knowledge, the devotee realizes:

“I am not separate from God — He is within me, and I am within Him.”

This is the ultimate union, the supreme goal of life — “Anuttamāṁ gatim.”
