🌿 Who Truly Creates Actions? Gita 5.14 Reveals the Mystery of Doership

Sanskrit Shloka (श्लोक)

IAST Transliteration

na kartṛtvaṃ na karmāṇi lokasya sṛjati prabhuḥ ।
na karmaphalasaṃyogaṃ svabhāvastu pravartate ॥ 5.14 ॥

English Translation

The Supreme Lord does not create the sense of doership, nor actions, nor the connection between actions and their fruits for the living beings. It is nature alone that functions in this way.

English Explanation

Lord Krishna teaches here that the Supreme Lord is not responsible for our actions, the sense of doership, or the connection between action and result.
Instead, it is material nature (prakriti) and the tendencies (gunas) inherent in every being that drive action.
The soul, by identifying with the ego, thinks “I am the doer.” This illusion leads to bondage and suffering.
The Lord remains untouched—He is only the eternal witness. True freedom comes when we rise above our conditioned nature and realize the self beyond action and fruit.

Life Lessons /

English

  1. God does not force us to act; it is our nature that drives action.

  2. The illusion of doership binds us to karma.

  3. Understanding and transcending our natural tendencies leads to liberation.

  4. Instead of blaming destiny or God, we should take responsibility for our choices.

Conclusion

🕉️ The City of Nine Gates: Gita 5.13 Reveals the Secret of Inner Freedom

Sanskrit Shloka (श्लोक)

IAST Transliteration

sarvakarmāṇi manasā saṃnyasyāste sukhaṃ vaśī ।
navadvāre pure dehī naiva kurvanna kārayan ॥ 5.13 ॥

English Translation

The self-controlled person, having mentally renounced all actions, dwells happily in the city of nine gates (the body). Neither does he act, nor does he cause others to act.

English Explanation

In this verse, Lord Krishna refers to the human body as a city with nine gates—two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, and the two excretory organs.
The enlightened yogi, established in self-control, lives peacefully in this body-city, free from the false notion of "doership."
Though actions happen through the senses, such a person realizes: “I am not the doer, nor do I compel others to act. I am simply the witness.”
This detachment leads to blissful living, as freedom is found not in abandoning the body, but in transcending the ego’s identification with action.

Life Lessons /

English

  1. View the body as a temporary dwelling, not as the self.

  2. Mental renunciation is more important than physical renunciation.

  3. True peace comes from self-control and detachment.

  4. Freedom lies in witnessing life without the ego’s claim of doership.
