English Translation
Arjuna said —
O Supreme Person (Puruṣottama), what is that Brahman? What is the Self (Adhyātma)? What is action (Karma)? And what are known as the material manifestation (Adhibhūta) and the divine presence (Adhidaiva)?
(Detailed Hindi Explanation)
🌼 Detailed English Explanation
This verse marks the beginning of Chapter 8 – Akṣara Brahma Yoga (The Yoga of the Imperishable Absolute).
Here, Arjuna seeks to clarify several profound spiritual concepts that Krishna mentioned earlier.
Arjuna’s questions reflect the natural curiosity of a sincere seeker who wishes to understand the complete nature of reality — not in theory, but as a means to ultimate liberation.
-
“What is Brahman?” – Arjuna wants to know the eternal, imperishable truth — the unchanging reality behind all existence.
-
“What is Adhyatma (Self)?” – He seeks to understand the true Self that resides in the body but is distinct from it.
-
“What is Karma?” – He wants to know the real meaning of action — what binds the soul and what leads to freedom.
-
“What is Adhibhuta?” – The material world, composed of the five great elements.
-
“What is Adhidaiva?” – The divine or cosmic consciousness governing nature and celestial beings.
Arjuna’s tone here is reverential — he calls Krishna “Puruṣottama”, meaning the Supreme Person, acknowledging His divine superiority and omniscience.
This verse beautifully represents the spirit of inquiry that is essential in the spiritual journey.
In the Gita, Krishna does not impose belief; He encourages understanding. Arjuna’s questions symbolize the curiosity of every human soul seeking answers about God, the Self, and the Universe.
The dialogue that follows (from verses 2 onward) contains Krishna’s profound revelations about the eternal nature of Brahman, the soul’s immortality, and the mystery of life and death.
